We Are Not a Government Office or Records Custodian. This is a privately run reference service, so we cannot retrieve a file, issue a certified copy, verify an occupant, or change a government roll. Contact the public office that keeps the record. Call 911 in an emergency. Report stalking or harassment to local police.
Where to Request a Connecticut Record
Record requests belong with the Connecticut office or library that holds the original:
- Land records, maps, and local certificates: contact the Town or City Clerk in the municipality where the property or event belongs. Connecticut has no active county recorder.
- Historical directories and family research: ask the Connecticut State Library or a local library about its catalog, reading room, and microfilm holdings.
- Voter registration: use the Secretary of the State's official voter-information route for an individual status and polling-place check.
- Statewide vital-record copies: contact the Department of Public Health Office of Vital Records or the town that holds the local record.
- An existing record not online: request it from the responsible agency under the Connecticut Freedom of Information Act, C.G.S. ยงยง1-200 through 1-242, subject to exemptions.
Historical records contact: Connecticut State Library, History & Genealogy Unit, 231 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut. The Library is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call the main desk at (860) 757-6500 or History & Genealogy at (860) 757-6580; reference email is CSL.ISREF@ct.gov. Check with the Library before traveling because some off-site archival groups may be unavailable.
To locate a municipal clerk, assessor, or registrar, use the State of Connecticut directory of towns and cities. For a question about this reference service, use the contact method provided by its operator; we do not accept requests on behalf of government custodians.
